[ARMACAD] UCSIA Summer School "Culture, Religion and Society" (26 August - 2 September 2012, Antwerp, Belgium)

Dear all,
The programme of Summer School will focus on the topic of Secularism(s)
and Religion in Society.

It is evident that religion, culture and society are strongly
interwoven and are crucial for understanding the contemporary world.
With globalization touching all aspects of our lives, religion(s) and
culture(s) have to understand their position in this complex globalizing
process. It is the aim of the interdisciplinary UCSIA summer school to
better understand the dynamic interplay between the macro- and
micro-social developments concerning religion that take place in much of
the contemporary world.

Guest lecturers:

Rajeev Bhargava (Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi),
Peggy Levitt (Wellesley College), Robert W. Hefner (Boston University)
and John Hutchinson (London School of Economics).

Practical details:

Participation and stay for young scholars and researchers are free of
charge. Participants should pay for their own travel expenses to
Antwerp.

We invite paper submissions for the International Conference on
Migration and Well-Being organized by Tel Aviv University and RC31.

The conference will address such issues as: Economic and psychological
well-being of immigrants Social exclusion and xenophobia The
contribution of immigrants to the well-being of the local population,
particularly the aging The role of remittances in improving the welfare
of immigrant families Well-being of asylum seekers and refugees
Education and children of immigrants Migration policies and the
well-being of immigrants

Papers relevant to the main theme of the conference, Migration and
Well-Being, will be particularly welcome. Other papers will be
considered as well, space permitting.

Submission of Papers
All paper presenters should submit an application consisting of the
following two items:
a) Name of Author(s) and affiliation(s)
b) A short abstract (maximum of 500 words)

European Yiddish Academic Workshop: Yiddish Culture in its European
Context
Lund University, October 20-28, 2012

The chair of Yiddish at Lund University, Sweden, in corporation with
the chairs of Yiddish at the Heinrich-Heine University of Duesseldorf
and the University of Amsterdam, are pleased to announce the convening
of the first European Yiddish Academic Workshop. This annual meeting
will assemble senior and junior European researchers in the field of
Yiddish from its earliest appearance in Europe to date.
Scholars of Yiddish of all ranks (including Ph.D. students) are invited
to submit a proposal for a presentation in this workshop. The topics to
be discussed this year are: 1. Yiddish Culture after 1945; 2. European
Centers of Yiddish Culture in the 20th Century. The lectures may cover
topics related to questions of language, literature, history, folklore
or any other relevant academic field. Length of a presentation is 20
minutes followed by a 15 minutes discussion.
Senior participants will be asked to finance their own cost of travel,
while the organizers will cover the costs of hotel and meals during the
meeting. The organizers will pay for travel expenses for junior scholars
including Ph.D. students.
Deadline for submitting a proposal for a lecture is May 15, 2012 and
proposals of no more than 400 words should be sent to

"The Contours of Post-Fordism in Contemporary Russia: Between Uncertainty and Stable Institutions"

Ekaterinburg, May 31 – June 1, 2012

For the first time in decades, claims for the necessity of radical revision of capitalism moved from the sphere of academic discussions to the political sphere, becoming one of the key global political issues.
The negative effects of capitalism are being widely acknowledged either in regard to the national economies or global social development. Restructuring of the current system of capitalist relations is acclaimed to be one of the priority goals for world political community.
Changes, which took place in the capitalist system over the last decades had a drastic effect on practically all spheres of human life in a relatively short period of time. Economic system based on flexible specialization and differentiated production laid the foundation for the new social condition, marked by the appearance of a totally new type of sociality. At the same time, the entire worldview shaped by the mature post-war capitalism collapsed. This condition being accompanied by the permanent instability and uncertainty was designated as post-Fordism.
For Russia, the study of post-Fordism has a special significance today.
After a sharp transition to market economy, post-Soviet people found themselves in a new situation when their "live environment" seemed to be relatively stable while the norms and principles of living changed seriously. This had a strong effect on social structures, the labor market and, especially, on people's identity. As a result, the system of economic and labor relations acquired a twofold character adopting to the rules of "light" capitalism and simultaneously staying in the "hard" Fordist Soviet reality. In this respect, the concepts and analytical tools developed by the scholars of post-Fordism two decades ago are capable now to take on new theoretical meanings while being used in the contemporary Russian context, focusing on the both socio-labor relations and the development of society as a whole.
The goal of the conference is to examine post-Fordism as a complex social phenomenon in the analysis of the post-Soviet Russian reality. The conference seeks to explore the contours of the post-Fordist model in Russia, its institutional and epistemological underpinnings, as well as the perspectives of post-Fordist relations for Russian business and populace.
The conference is held in Ekaterinburg, the industrial center of Russia, now oscillating between the long-standing industrial tradition and the dreams of post-industrial prosperity. On the one hand, one can find here a strong entrepreneurial community aimed at carrying out business activity corresponding to world standards.  On the other hand, the rhetoric of re-industrialization, launched by local authorities becomes increasingly more powerful and popular as well. The First Ural Industrial Biennale of Contemporary Art, which took place in 2010, provoked the heated debates about the city' industrial past and/or future among the artistic community and the broader audience.
The conference welcomes papers from scholars in the field of economics, sociology, political science, philosophy, contemporary art, marketing, management as well as representatives from business, government agencies, mass media.

Main topics to be discussed at the conference include, but are not limited to::
•    epistemological grounds of the post-Fordist worldview;
•    evolution of state and public institutions within the context of post-Fordist economy;
•    split identity: (post)Soviet subject in a changing social environment;
•    market relations in Russia: universal rules to be not for all?
•    ethics of labor relations and values of Russian business community;
•    aestheticization of labor: the artist as a producer and a "creative conveyor" in the post-Fordist era

Please, submit papers limited to twelve (12) typewritten pages in the
Word format with spacing 1.5, in Times New Roman, font 14. References
should follow the MLA style. The submissions should include the
speaker's name, place of work and position, as well as the contact
address, phone and fax numbers, e-mail and the title of the proposed
paper. The final decision as to which papers will be accepted for
publication and for presentation at the conference will be made as a
result of the review process.

ՄԱԿ-ի հայաստանյան գրասենյակը հայտարարում է մրցանակաբաշխություն Հայաստանում ՄԱԿ-ի աշխատանքի վերաբերյալ լավագույն, առանձնահատուկ և անկողմնակալ լրագրողական լուսաբանման համար: Այս տարի մրցանակաբաշխությունը նվիրված է Հայաստանում ՄԱԿ-ի գրասենյակի 20-ամյակին:

ՄԱԿ-ի Մրցանակի լրագրողական նյութերի հանձնման կարգը

2012թ.փետրվարի 1-ից գրասենյակն ընդունելու է 2012 թ. սկզբից մինչև հոկտեմբերի 14-ը հրապարակված լրագրողական նյութեր Հայաստանում ՄԱԿ-ի աշխատանքի վերաբերյալ: Մրցույթի մասնակիցները պետք է լինեն ՀՀ քաղաքացի` Հայաստանում գործող տպագիր, հեռարձակվող կամ առցանց մամուլում աշխատող անհատ լրագրողներ:

Maastricht University aims to further strengthen its position as a leading European university offering high-quality education with an international orientation. To this end, the university implements a pro-active recruitment policy for international students, in particular for the Master's programmes. Scholarships are made available by the Maastricht University Scholarship Fund in order to encourage talented students from outside the EU/EEA to follow a Master's programme at Maastricht University. One of these scholarships is the Maastricht University High Potential scholarship.

Who is eligible?

Applicants must be admissible for a master's programme or graduate programme for professionals at Maastricht University and must not be older than 35 years at the start of the academic year (1 September 2012). You may apply simultaneously for a master's programme and this scholarship.

Scholarship applicants must have obtained excellent results in their previous studies. This must be shown in the application file by including, for example, grade lists or reference letters. In case of equivalent qualification, preference will be given to applications, which show that the applicant is among the top 5%.

Applicants must come from a country outside the EU/EEA and meet the requirements for obtaining an entry visa and residence permit for the Netherlands.

Duration of the High Potential scholarship

The High Potential scholarship is awarded for the duration of the Master's programme, with a maximum of 12 months. In case of a two-year Master's programme, the Scholarship Committee will award the scholarship for a maximum of 24 months.

[ARMACAD] CROSS-BORDER NETWORKING: Armenian and Turkish Young Professionals Focus on Energ

Invitation to a Feb. 21, 2012 at 4:30pm presentation at the American University of Armenia, PAB 308

A group of 24 young architects, urban planners, and engineershalf from Armenia and half from Turkeyjoined together in December for a weeklong training on energy efficiency and clean energy in construction and urban design.

This was a first ever such an event organized between Armenian and Turkish building design professionals. The primary aim of the workshop was to create a cross-border network of students, young professionals and faculty members interested in environmentally sustainable building and city design.

The presentation will talk about the training and the inter-cultural exchange that this workshop facilitated. The speakers will also discuss future plans.

The workshop was organized by Civic Forum, an Armenian NGO in cooperation with Yildiz Technical University in Istanbul and Izocam, a manufacturer and distributor of insulation materials headquartered in Turkey. Funding and support was provided by the Eurasia Partnership Foundation, which administers the U.S. Agency for International Development's Support to Armenia-Turkey Rapprochement Project.

Speakers

Speakers will include some combination of the Armenian participants and faculty advisors. The faculty advisors were Alen Amirkhanian (AUA) and Sarhat Petrosyan (YSUAC).

Confidence Building in the South Caucasus – a joint initiative
of the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Black Sea Trust

The Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Black Sea Trust for Regional Cooperation of the German Marshall Fund (BST) are continuing their joint funding initiative to support confidence building activities of non-state actors in the South Caucasus and its neighboring regions. Projects related to Turkish-Armenian rapprochement are also supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Partners are convinced that civil society can make a valuable contribution to the process of confidence building, mutual understanding and reconciliation between populations in territories involved in (armed) conflicts. This initiative is designed to encourage grantees to investigate new ways, methods and approaches to generating mutual understanding.

1. Program Description

The projects should be initiated by civil society organizations, who can successfully involve various population groups from the region in their projects' activities. Organizations requesting grants must be legally registered in one of the following countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine. The involvement of additional partners (especially those from the EU) is possible and welcome.

Projects working in the following areas would be especially appreciated:

- cross-border initiatives for youth;

- approaches to civic education or active citizenship;

- approaches to reconciliation and peace that incorporate experiences from history and convey them to the younger generation;

- the role of media in overcoming stereotypes.

A special emphasis is placed on multilateral initiatives and those that reach out to the neighboring countries - Russia and Turkey.

Projects should be exemplary and make use of novel and innovative means of building trust. The average grant will be around 20 000 USD (about 15 000 EUR), multilateral projects can in special cases exceed that amount. The projects must be completed by March 30, 2013 and reported to BST within two months of the project's completion. The maximum duration of the project should not exceed 9 months.

2. Application

The entire program administration is carried out by the BST on behalf of partners. Application forms and all other documents (for narrative and financial reporting) will be provided by the BST website (http://www.gmfus.org/grants-fellowships/grantmaking-programs/black-sea-trust). Applications and reports are to be submitted in English only. Decisions about selection and funding of the submitted projects will be taken jointly by representatives of the donors, with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation only involved in Turkish-Armenian reconciliation projects. A grant letter to the selected projects will be issued by the BST by June 2012.

We are pleased to inform you that the ICTNET (European Network for the Research on the Economic Impact of ICT) will hold its fourth workshop at the Imperial College in London on 23-24 April 2012.

The ICTNET is a project financed by European Commission (DG Information Society and Media) aimed at enhancing the coordination of the research in the economics of ICT in Europe.

The goal of this fourth workshop is to bring together leading researchers on the economics of information and communication technologies (ICT), intangibles and innovation in order to discuss recent scientific contributions and outstanding policy challenges. Particular emphasis will be placed on ICT, R&D and intangibles and ICT diffusion to the economy. The topics of interest are:

- Developments in the definition, measurement and impact of intangible assets and their association with ICT, at macro and micro levels

- Knowledge links within and between firms, and relationship to innovation

- Complementarity of ICT, R&D, skills, and intangible measures

- Analysing innovation and ICT by firm-level data linking

- ICT, knowledge flows and innovation networks of various types (e.g. social networking, open source)

- ICT, intangibles and their impact on economic performance (using growth accounting or other methods)

- IP and innovation issues

International Forum of Student Unions in Georgia

Tbilisi State University (TSU) is the largest educational institution in Georgia and its student union unites the most active part of Georgian youth.

Now TSU Student self-government wishes to intensify student-to-student connections. For this reason we are organizing Georgia International Forum of Student Unions (GIFSU) in 1-5 June, 2012, a second edition of the same event, which was held last year under the name of TIFSU (Tbilisi International Forum of Student Unions).

This year, GIFSU will gather around 200 participants (100 Georgian and 100 international delegates) from all over the world's leading universities in a 5-star hotel in Anaklia, Georgian sea resort, to discuss contemporary challenges of youth activities in the world.

GIFSU will involve its participants in different types of activities. The academic part will be provided by foreign and Georgian lecturers, who will conduct classes on different topics, related to nowadays youth policies and future prospective. Participants will be given opportunity to work in groups as well as individually on presentations. Meetings with high officials of Georgian government are also planned.

Note, that there is NO PARTICIPATION FEE. TSU Student Self-government will cover these following costs:

 Accommodation in 5-star hotel in Anaklia during the forum;

 One extra night accommodation in Tbilisi in case of advanced or delayed flight;

 3 times meal per day during the forum;

 Local transportation;

 Field trips and social program;

 Pick-up service from and to airport / bus station / railway station;

 All study materials

We do not cover applicants' transportation expenses to and from Georgia. However we can advise you the cheapest companies to arrive in Georgia. Please note that apart from the People's Republic of China and Russian Federation, citizens of almost all other countries can enter Georgia and stay here without obtaining visas.

Canadian Centre for Architecture 2012-2013 Visiting Scholars Program The Study Centre of the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) announces its 2012-2013 Visiting Scholars Program. The Program welcomes applications from scholars and architects conducting research at post-doctoral or more advanced academic levels.

The CCA is an international research centre and museum founded on the conviction that architecture is a public concern. It promotes the understanding of architectural ideas through advanced research, exhibitions, publications, conferences, and other programs. The resources of the CCA library and collections of prints and drawings, photographs, and archives offer scholars and architects a wealth of primary and secondary material for research in the history, theory, and practice of architecture.

Through its Visiting Scholars Program, the CCA Study Centre welcomes architects and scholars pursuing advanced research in the history and theory of architecture in its broadest sense. Candidates should submit a research proposal that takes into account the mandate of the CCA and the scope of its library and collections; no other chronological or thematic restrictions apply. Residencies at the Study Centre may extend from one to four months. Stipends, private offices, administrative and research support are provided.

Applications must be received via the online application portal by 15 April 2012. Notification is in summer 2012.

digitize 110,000 Pages of Middle Eastern Manuscripts

Brill and Leiden University Libraries are proud to present the publication of 110,000 pages of Arabic manuscripts under the title Pioneer Orientalists: The Manuscript Collections of Scaliger, Raphelengius and Golius from Leiden University Libraries.

Leiden University Libraries has a world-famous collection of Middle Eastern Manuscripts. Its core collection consists of volumes brought together by the Leiden Orientalists Joseph Justus Scaliger (d. 1609), and Jacobus Golius (d. 1667). These include extremely rare, sometimes unique, manuscripts. The Golius collection in particular is well-known for its texts on mathematics and other Islamic sciences.

Brill and Leiden University Libraries have joined forces to scan and publish these manuscripts. This not only makes these valuable texts available to a larger community of scholars, it also helps to preserve these manuscripts, 30 of which were restored as part of the project. In total the collection consists of 267 manuscripts in 303 volumes, counting 109,517 pages. Most texts are in Arabic, with secondary texts in Ottoman Turkish and Persian.

Փետրվարի 17-ին ժամը 13:30 ԵՊՀ Ֆիզիկայի ֆակուլտետի Կոնֆերանսների դահլիճում (կանաչ դահլիճ) «Մասնագիտական կրթության որակի ապահովման ազգային կենտրոն» հիմնադրամի «Ուսանողության Ձայն» ծրագիրը կհրապարակի հայաստանի խոշոր ուսումնական կենտրոնների ուսանողության շրջանում իրականացված հետազոտության արդյունքները: Հետազոտության թեման է «Բարձրագույն կրթության հայաստանյան առանձնահատկությունները. ուսանողների կարծիքի հարցում»:

Հետազոտությունը կենտրոնացել է այնպիսի թեմաների ուսումնասիրության վրա, ինչպիսիք են կրեդիտային համակարգը, դասավանդում-ուսումնառությունը, ուսանողակենտրոն ուսուցումը, ուսանողների սովորելու մոտիվացիան, մասնակցությունը բուհի կրթության որակի ապահովմանը և մի շարք այլ հարցեր:

Նշենք նաև, որ փետրվարի 17-ին լրանում է ՈԱԱԿ «Ուսանողության Ձայն» ծրագրի գործունեության մեկ տարին: Ծրագրի հիմնական նպատակն է ուսանողներին դարձնել պահանջատեր իրենց կրթության նկատմամբ: Այն կյանքի կոչելու համար ուսանողները մեկամյա գործունեության ընթացքում հայաստանյան մի շարք բուհերում ձևավորվել են անընդհատ ընդլայնվող ուսանողական ցանց, իրականացրել են բազմաթիվ հանդիպումներ և խմբային քննարկումներ, ուսումնասիրել և բարձրաձայնել են ուսանողներին առավել հուզող խնդիրները:

Ծրագիրը միտված է ակտիվացնելու ուսանողների և կրթության քաղաքականություն մշակողների միջև համագործակցությունը:

Միջոցառմանը հրավիրված են ՀՀ ԿԳ նախարար Արմեն Աշոտյանը, հայաստանյան բուհերի, միջազգային կրթական ծրագրերի ներկայացուցիչներ և ուսանողներ:
